Windows 8 - Review

The windows 8 consumer preview is out to public and it does feel different, rather it is different. This windows is more made with touchscreen users in mind than the PC users. This version of windows has integrated with multiple services like facebook, google, linkedin, flickr. Using these new apps and hubs with a touchscreen can be a joy. But the problem is there is no functional app store yet. Metro style interface may work good on touchscreen devices but it can definitely be a mistake on PC's. There is a difference between a tiny tablet and 27" screen and this windows is definitely going to get a rough welcome. Plus, switching between metro and desktop doesn't quite make sense. Metro is like the beautified but way less functional substitute of desktop. Personally about this whole metro thing i believe microsoft could have done what apple has on this one, make separate OS's for tablets and PC's.

Talking about the start button, REALLY??!!, start button could not find its way into the budget of latest windows? Start button has always been the most unique feature of windows since '95. It has been the most functional and utilised feature of windows since its launch. And because of  this, windows 8 is going to get a rough welcome in the market. One of the new windows user on PC advisor says :

"I don't want to interact with my computer, wildly gesticulating at it. Its not a person. I want to sit in the office minding my own business quietly tapping away on my PC until I have nothing left to give or the good Lord takes pity on me and releases me from my duties early.
What is easier? To hold your arm up at a screen, or rest it on the desk and wiggle the mouse? 8 hours of pointing and rubbing? There's going to be some backache.
I could do everything of course, on a tiny mobile phone. Absorbed in 4x2 inch screen.  I can't see a 4x2 inch screen and my fingers are too chubby to use a 4x2 inch screen, but I don't think Microsoft imagines anyone over the age of 22 uses a computer. I'm old, I'm tired, I'm decrepit. Why would Microsoft want to make me miserable?"

So, this quite explains the new users reviews towards the windows.

But, on the other hand windows 8 is quite fast and smooth than its predecessors. It increases the battery life on tablets by about 20 - 25%.The another good thing about windows 8 is its simplified task manager. This new task manager is quite compact and easy to use. Expanded task manager is also made quite easy to use.Ribbon user interface is quite good as it makes the functioning of folders quite easy. New user friendy control panel is good enough but it still feels weird to have two control panels for the same work. Windows 8 also features features new PDF reader called modern reader so now you dont have to rely on same old adobe PDF Reader (which is quite slow) for reading PDF files. Aero auto colorization is also a nice feature in windows 8, it quite mixes the desktop background and the theme on basis of primary colors. This feature was an additional widget feature in windows 7 called aura. Another good thing about this windows is it feels quite connected to the internet with file download verification and cloud integration with skydrive and windows live mesh.

In spite of some good features, this windows will be facing a lot of criticism for the loss of start button and its metro style interface for PC because not many people are going to like tablet interface on their PC.
